Fake Door Close Buttons(?)

I was skimming through The Week earlier today when I read that the “door close” buttons on elevators are usually fake:

In most elevators, at least in any built or installed since the early 1990s, the door-close button doesn’t work. It is there mainly to make you think it works.

I must find out if this is true or not.
